Liberal Sissy, David Brooks

Today arch-liberal, Communist pansy columnist for the New York Times, David Brooks examined the Republican party’s alienation of educated voters.

Brooks laments the GOP’s unfortunate decision to play the culture warfare card so consistently and so poorly that it has cost them an entire generation of key constituents. Sarah Palin is the most recent and most enthusiastic soldier fighting for the common values of small-town Americans.

The Republicans have played this card well for thirty years- and due to a crippled Democratic machine that has been completely ineffective in convincing working class voters that they represent their best interests, until very recently- it has worked.

The politics of resentment can be very powerful, but the key figure in the GOP’s recent history represented a different kind of strategy: one of hope and optimism. Although I think his legacy is greatly overrated, I think Reagan would be profoundly disappointed with today’s Republican strategies.

It will cost them. Dearly.

Today Barack Obama has a near double-digit lead in the polls. John Mccain must close the gap with only 3 weeks and one debate leftover. The Mccain campaign’s idea seems to be that their only chance to win is the kitchen sink approach- by tying Obama to Bill Ayers they hope to make him look like a terrorist sympathizer.

Somebody needs to tell them that Hillary Clinton tried this already.

How did that work out again?
