The American Theater of the Absurd continued in earnest last night.
I watched the Presidential “debate” on WTTW, but afterwards I felt compelled to watch the commentary and wrap-up on Fox News.
On every other station, the polls that asked who won the debate favored Obama by around 55%.
The viewers on Fox News must have seen something entirely different, because 87% of them think that John McCain won.
Where do these people come from? Are they willfully ignorant? Do they automatically assume that because their candidate did not foam at the mouth or say that we should nuke China that this means he won, hands down? Why so thoroughly biased? Even the “LIBERAL” news networks favored Obama by 20-30 percent at most.
I’m not even going to say that Barack Obama won the debate. All I’m saying is that if you think McCain won by an 8 to 1 margin in this entirely objective contest, you obviously were not listening to the debate and had decided in your mind beforehand that no matter what was said, John McCain would win.
Nevermind the fact that this whole format is ridiculous. You have 5 minutes to come up with a comprehensive solution to the world’s energy crisis, and GO!
Is it any wonder why we elect such brilliant people who are so good at lying?
Folks, they’re not talking about us. They’re talking down to us. Obama just happens to be much, much, much, much better at it than his opponent. What do I mean? One of the Fox pundits remarked that he thought John McCain scored big points with his Joe the Plumber metaphor.
Joe the Plumber is not a metaphor. He is a real person with real concerns, and I’m sure he’s dumbfounded by the way he was used by both candidates, tossed back and forth, then discarded like a sullied sock at the end of the night once their points had been made.
This is the level of political discourse in this country: we are not even people to them anymore.
The media wizards, spinmeisters, and wordsmiths skated around any conceivable notion of objectivity, and refused to entertain the idea that human beings who have not made their decision yet might be watching.
On every channel covering the aftermath, we saw madness spewing from the mouths of political insiders, campaign managers, and lifetime politicians, all completely incapable of telling the truth, even if it happened to be dick-smacking them across the face when they appeared on camera.
I sent a helpful e-mail to National Review correspondent Mona Charen yesterday about the different ways that voters seek out their news. In her column, Mona bemoaned the idea that a Democratic administration would re-instate the fairness doctrine, which would force equal time for political ideas. The legislation is supposedly meant to target conservative talk radio, which has done so much for democracy in this country. Just last week, two conservative commentators accused Magic Johnson of faking his AIDS, in order to gain sympathy. What boldness! What a wonderful way to use the first amendment! Bravo, gentleman! You are a credit to your species, and I hope some day you fulfill the dream of learning to breathe without gills.
Charen noted that liberal talk radio has never caught on. I had to tell her that liberals and independents tend to READ about politics, rather than listen to the radio.
I guess that’s the only point I can make through all of this mindless horseshit.
Don’t watch Fox News. Don’t watch CNN. Don’t watch MSNBC. Don’t even watch PBS. Don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh or Dennis Miller.
We’re never going to get smart if we keep getting our news from the TV or radio. Please, no matter what your party affiliation, find something to read. If you’re going to get pompous, biased manure shoveled into your brain, at least do it through a medium that requires a little bit of effort on your part to understand.

About 6 months ago, I decided that I would get all my US news fromt the BBC and Gaurdian UK. I’ve found they’re so much more objective (since they don’t really care who wins) than any US based news. It’s kinda sad, if you think about it.

No, we are not willfully ignorant. We watch FOX News because the left wing media including ABC, NBC and CBS are so far in the tank for Obama we need to at least have an outlet for conservatism. Campbell “Obama Mama” Brown and Chris “I get giddy” Matthews are two examples. Evidently in reading your blog, you have been watching the National Barack Channel too and you drank the Kool-Aid.

@SteveJJ- did you even read what I wrote? I said NOT to watch MSNBC. Did you miss that? Did your eyes magically skip over everything I wrote when I suggested that Fox News viewers might be biased? Your last sentence isn’t even a sentence. This is why you need to read! You just proved me right. Thanks, genius!
@Norcross- BBC is definitely the best way to go if you have to get your news from the TV, but I still try to steer away from it.

Lot a good points Tim. I’d have to say Guardian and BBC are not necessarily unbiased though Norcross.

nice post tim. I love that you decided to watch the f/u commentary on FOX. That’s hilarious. I laughed when obama mentioned FOX news as well, I thought I was watching The Daily Show.
I think to some extent everyone has a bias, but it just seems to me that the democrats will right about the facts (more or less) and if they have a chance at bias you will certainly hear it. But it just seems FOX news and republican outlets, especially in this campaign, are straight horseshit propaganda machines.
Its sickening and frustrating. McCain entire campaign at the moment is pure nonsense and I don’t know how the GOP pundits get up every morning and live with the work that they’re doing. O’Reilly, Hannity, Carlson, and the bunch of them seem to fall in line like a group of retarded sheep following a twisted shepherd.
The worst part, is I can’t even tell who is to blame.

Truthfully, I don’t think it really matters who’s presenting the news or who’s even listening. It becomes a serious joke. We watch because we want to be informed, and when those who inform us become bias because too are human and have options as well, along with the media. Then all decentcy falls from grace. And the only measure to look forward too, is the outcome, the final decsion, the winner. Cause sometimes, the winner is even the Real Winner. I’ve watched debate after debate, just as I’ve wittnessed oral confrontations, arguments, and discussions alike. And the one thing that I’ve learned, is that generally when a person handles themself calmly, in spite of their apposer, then thief the ones telling the truth. Getting agitated and unable to look a person in the eye, generally means a total dislike and deep hatred for a person other than what’s being discussed.
I have no hatred for McCain. I just think that people of wealth have no idea what this country or other countries need to do to enable those who seriously look up to them for direction’s in their lives. We admire them cause their wealthy, not necessarly who they are. Cause we want to be wealthy like them. And, they should be able to lead us out of the poverty. But they can’t!!! Cause most are too busy making sure they never get in that position. Ever.
We see Obama as a way out of this daily poverty. A new choice. A new solution. Possibly. We’ve lived those other presidents choices, laws, and we still find ourselves grappling for the next dollar bill. I work a decent job, and have thousands that I owe the government. And day by day I look for a knock on the door, when mr. President comes a takes it all away. Do I work hard? Everyday! Do I waist money? I can’t afford to! I too have a daughter in college, who’s studying medicine, needs braces, clothing, and public transportation, home every now and then.
I just want an honest president. Honest views from the media, so I can make a sincere choice for my life, my welfare, my daughter, my family, my neighbrohood, my church. I want to atleast try someone different. What could it hurt? Can’t be any worse than we are now. Just give me the unbiased news, so I can make my own choice, not yours. Who’s life is it anyway?

sorry about the misspelled words… Typed from my Iphone.

I happened on a link at The Young Turks that seemed to make more sense than anything I might see on “The Boob Tube” ( not so called because of the devastating brilliance of its analysis ).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plutocracy
And there are reasons the so-called libruls ( you couldn’t find any in the US without a magnifying glass ) don’t watch Fox. Murdoch’s Media are liars.
One of the best posts I ever saw was on a blog that was pulled by the owner : a simple collection of shots of Fox headlines that were distortions of reality.
Anyway, You want news ? Try ‘Real News’ or ‘Current’.

Funny though…
When a liberal runs against a liberal, guess who wins? The liberal! So clearly the liberal won.
