Revelations, Obama, and Apocalyptaphobia

The second most popular post that I have written on this blog is my article examining the possibility that Barack Obama is the Antichrist that was prophesied in the book of Revelations.

When I first wrote it, there was little reaction. But as the election campaign has drawn on, it has consistently been the top search term pull that I’ve seen. Here are some search terms for the last 30 days:

- Barack Obama Antichrist Prophecy- 1,181 views

- is barack obama the antichrist – 17 views

- 2008 obama china antichrist bible prophecy – 4 views

- can it be that senator barack obama is the antichrist – 3 views
There are a number of similar searches with more results, but you get the idea. Since it’s a topic that my readers are so interested in, and I have no doubt the question will become even more prevalent if Barack Obama wins the election, let’s take another look.

4 reals?

4 reals?

Part of the problem is that the book of Revelations itself is an account of dreams and visions related to the apostle John by an angel. As such, the stories and ideas expressed therein can be confusing, vague, and highly metaphorical and therefore open to all kinds of interpretation.

They center around a series of cataclysmic events and wars that will eventually culminate with the return of the son of God, Jesus Christ to earth. An extremely popular book series about Revelations, called Left Behind, has brought the story to millions of readers. It’s a spreading phenomenon. Not a day goes by when you won’t see a Discovery or History channel special on the End of Days, or find a new apocalyptic movie in the theaters. (The latest is Blindness starring Julianne Moore, which I highly recommend, whether you’re interested in such things or not.)

In recent years I have termed a worldwide trend called Apocalyptaphobia: the fear of the end of the world. Much of this has to do with current events including climate change, wars in the middle east, and the state of Israel being re-established. I have suffered from Apocalyptaphobia myself- in the summer of 2006 during the war between Lebanon and Israel I started having peroidic panic attacks and couldn’t sleep for days at a time. I nearly had a nervous breakdown, but got into therapy, and have been fine since.

Why was I so nervous?

I believe that the events described in Revelations will really happen one day, and in August of 2006, I thought it would begin any day.

Apparently, I’m not alone. Go back to those search terms- I got over 1,000 people searching this month alone for evidence that Barack Obama may be the Antichrist. Now, take into account that my blog has only been focusing on politics for a year now, and my readership is pretty slim. I went and investigated to see where my article was in the Google rankings for the search “barack obama antichrist prophecy.” I could not find it.

What this means is that a minimum of tens of thousands of people are scouring the internet every day for information on this topic, and they’re digging into dozens of google pages to find answers. That’s just in English speaking areas with access to the internet. How many Apocalyptophobes can there be worldwide? I have no idea. But they’re out there, and my guess is that it’s somewhere in the millions.

Is Barack Obama the Antichrist? I don’t think so. Of course, I could be wrong.

The greatest evidence that I can come up with is a matter of character- what strikes me most about Obama is the humility that he shows, at least in public spaces. Revelations clearly depicts the Antichrist as egomaniacal: he demands that a statue be built of him and that people worship it, he declares himself to be God, and sets himself on a throne in Jerusalem.

If Barack Obama does any of these things in the future, then you can say I was wrong. Until then, I have a hard time seeing BHO as the Abomination, because he’s shown humility and has openly talked about his Christian faith.

Let me clarify this, in case you think I’m trying to insult people who believe this is a possibility. I sympathize with you, really. I know what it’s like to be fearful and to worry about how many days we have left on this Earth. It’s something that I struggle with more often than I care to admit. I can’t recommend that you start taking anti-depressants or find a good cognitive therapist. What I can recommend is that you take a word of comfort from the same book that could be turning your hair white as we speak. This verse became my mantra when my face went numb, my heart was racing, and I was completely engulfed by fear:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways and he will direct your path.” Proverbs 3:5

Folks, we are not in control. Even if you are terrified and 100% convinced that Obama is indeed the Antichrist, you can take heart in knowing that it’s all part of the plan.

What determines the anti-Christ is his genealogy. Satan often brings peace before revealing what he is really up to. He can impersonate an Angel of Light. Don’t be fooled. I don’t know if Obama is the one, but, from what I understand about the Anti-Christ is that he will come from the Tribe of Dan (which has been lost). This is a tribe of black jews. Find out his genealogy – this is one way to tell. I believe it is very scary how many people support this man and are pushing for him without really knowing him at all.

I have wondered this myself, if he is or not he will take down America with his liberal ideology and the Democrats controlling Washington. His complete support of Planned Parenthood in aborting babies anytime for any reason is beyond belief. With Farrakhan coming out saying he is the Messiah is troubling. My thoughts are that he probably is we will know for sure after someone tries to assassinate him with a death shot and he survives relatively unharmed. I suspect first he will pass his handgun laws so people cant defend themselves, censorship of radios and television so we are feed lies. And with the National Civilian Security Force he plans on creating that will be better equipped than our Military (probably young Muslim Black men already trained by Farrakhan, and your general misguided youth looking for acceptance) people that cause division or don’t bow to his will, will be shot or beheaded in public executions. Having read some on 2012 end of the world thing, I believe that God will use this as Astronamers all agree that something will happen in 2012 due to the alignment of the planets, astroids or something astronomical possibly causing some of the doomsday prophecies in the Bible – the sun turning like blood, causing the deaths of a large percentage of animals and people.
I am hoping I am wrong on all of this.
Unfortunately Obama and his people are hiding so much about this man’s past that genealogy searches bring up nothing. I tried.

This is exactly what I’m talking about. Do you really think that if he was the Antichrist that you’d be able to prove it by doing internet research through genealogy or numerology?

Lyn- where did you hear that he would come from the tribe of Dan? I don’t remember reading that anywhere in the bible.

Rebecca- If Obama is not the AC- the Democrat controlled Washington is going to do a lot of good for America.

    Hi Tim,

Everything in life is not in the Bible. As I have read in other places, Revelations or the Apocalypse is hard to understand. Many theologians have spent their lives studying it. One thing we know is that it is not in chronological order. It can apply to past, present, and future. The tribe of Dan (one of the original tribes of Israel) was lost for a very long time – they have only been found in the past 20 years. Clues have been given about his genealogy as well as his numeric sign. I am not into numerology, but as I said in my original comment, this man says nothing, has no experience, has no real colleagues to back him – he relies on charisma. Charisma is definitely one of the signs of the Antichrist. He will suck people in and then his true colors will show. Like I said, I don’t know if he is the one, but there is enough information out there and studies on the Book of Revelation, along with genuine private revelation to give us some clues. Determining who the Antichrist is will be more apparent (from past prototypes) than the end of the world. We do not know the day or the hour of the end of the world, but we do know many signs of the Antichrist. Information comes from both the old Testament and the New. I am not worried about it – I pray. It is just an interesting phenomenon to look at in light of this man’s failure to really answer any questions put to him. We need to think more critically and logically and stop being taken in by someone’s appearance. Vague answers do not mean solutions to anything. Ask him to define his terms! What is change? What does he mean by this – why is he not specific? Change means different things to different people. As I’m sure you know – all change is not necessarily for the good. A person who would say it’s okay to kill an infant when an abortion doesn’t work has some problems with respect for human life. If he does not respect the most helpless why should he respect any of us? Lyn

    Rebecca,

I agree that it would be interesting to see if he survives a wound to the head. That is one of the telltale signs.

Tim, I cannot believe you endorsed “Blindness”. Now, I love me some end of the world movies, but “Blindness” looks bad. It got booed at Cannes. It got reedited for its American release. Notice that the first trailers for it made it look all touching and insightful? Then the second batch made it look all scary and action packed? Yeah. Then we have the word of the one person I know who saw it who said that it was sheer doo-doo. Can I trust that guy? Not really. He liked “Michael Clayton”… And sorry I totally ignored the actual point of your post.

Thank you so much for the verse at the end. I voted for Obama with all the anti-christ talk, I can’t help but doubt myself and start my mind racing. I have panic attacks about dying/eternity/the end of the world already. I remember reading the same crap about Bush when I was a freshman in high school in 2000, and having the same horrible cloud of panic follow me around, and again after 9/11. I wrote down that verse and I’m going to be carrying it around with me.

So are Christians now pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage???? God didn’t change, His Word will stand forever. Wickedness proceeds from the wicked. I see no Christian faith in him. However, I do not believe he is THE antichrist, though he is AN antichrist, for anyone not for us is against us. Hard days are ahead for true born again believers in the States now that he is president. KNOW GOD’S WORD. Know it! Deceptions is already thick.

  11. Tim Says:

Lara- a sin is a sin. Personally I consider starting a war that kills hundreds of thousands of people to be worse than gay marriage, but that’s my opinion. We are all wicked and unclean, as far as I remember. Self-righteousness will get you nowhere.

  12. Nick Says:

I’m a Christian and I’m not Anti-Abortion or Anti Gay Marriage.. Doesn’t mean I’m for them.. But If you can show me any passages in the NT that are specifically against Gay Marriage or Abortion I’d love to read them..

American Christianity has become so political it’s amazing.. People subvert the word of God for their Political and avaricious purposes.. 100 years ago people used it as an excuse to segregate races.. Today people preach that God want’s us to be wealthy *cough* Olsteen..

Having said that.. I beleive Obama may be the Anti-Christ.. Why? 250,000 people stood in the cold of Chicago Crying and Wailing for him.. He’s Popular in a way that I’ve never seen before.. in a way that Hitler was popular.. in a way that Bush was Popular after 9/11.. And with that popularity and power comes the mandate to enact whatever laws he wants.. Be it Illegal Wars in Foreign lands or the Patriot Act/I forget the name of the act Hitler brought in but it was similar in nature to the patriot act..

He also has his False Prophet.. Oprah.. I heard from someone else that Jesse Jackson said in an interview last night that Oprah MADE Obama President..I didn’t see the interview.. but it would be telling.. Oprah has been spreading New Age Religion on her show.. it will be interesting to see how it plays out..

If Obama Recieves a deadly wound he survives then all bets are off.. He DEFINITELY is the Anti-Christ.. He will probably Finish out his two terms and then at some point he will comeback as Secretary General of the UN or leader of some other Organization Based in Europe..

There is no reason to worry.. Infact I Hope he is the Anti-Christ.. Because that means the Day of the Lord is Coming.. When Every tongue confesses that Jesus is Lord and every Knee bows to him.. It’s all part of the plan..

    Peace in Christ
